X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) and pseudo neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy (P-NALD) are neurodegenerative demyelinating diseases resulting from the functional loss of the peroxisomal ATP-binding cassette transporter D (ABCD1) and from single peroxisomal enzyme deficiency (Acyl-CoA oxidase1: ACOX1), respectively. In the brain and in the plasma of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), marked accumulation of C22:0 and of very long chain fatty acids (C24:0 ; C26:0) have been reported. Important decreases of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; C22:6 n-3) have also been described as well as quantitative and qualitative modifications of plasmalogens. Altogether, these lipid modifications suggest an implication of peroxisomal metabolism disorders in the physiopathology of AD. Reduction of total lipids (TL) content and significant variations of triglyceride (TG) and phospholipid (PL) fractions were observed as a consequence of exposure of Ciona intestinalis ovaries to tributyltin chloride (TBTCL) solutions. In particular, an evident TG decrease and a PL increase were observed, which probably provoked an increment in membrane fluidity, because of the high concentration of long chain fatty acids and, as a consequence, PL. 9-cis-Retinoic acid enhances fatty acid-induced expression of the liver fatty acid-binding protein gene

The role of retinoic acids (RA) on liver fatty acid- binding protein (L-FABP) expression was investigated in the well differentiated FAO rat hepatoma cell line. 9-cis-Retinoic acid (9-ci's-RA) specifically enhanced L-FABP mRNA levels in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The higher induction was found 6 h after addition of 10 -6 M 9-CK-RA in the medium. RA also enhanced further both L-FABP mRNA levels and cytosolic L-FABP protein content induced by oleic acid. GIPC: Glycosyl Inositol Phospho Ceramides, the major sphingolipids on earth

What are the most abundant sphingolipids on earth? The answer is Glycosyl Inositol Phosphoryl Ceramides (GIPCs) present in fungi and the green lineage. In this review, we discuss the putative role of plant GIPCs in the lipid bilayer asymmetry, in the lateral organization of membrane rafts and in the very long chain fatty acid inter-leaflet coupling of lipids in the plant plasma membrane (PM). A special focus on the structural similarities -and putative functions- of GIPCs is discussed by comparison with animal gangliosides, structural homologs of plant GIPCs.
